Making Vietnam-Thailand relations stronger, more sustainable, and more effective

At noon on May 28th, in Bangkok, General Secretary and President To Lam and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met with the press to announce the results of their talks.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed his pleasure in welcoming General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife, along with the high-level Vietnamese delegation; affirming that the visit holds special significance on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Vietnam.

The visit serves as a basis for both sides to jointly guide the implementation of the comprehensive strategic partnership in a deeper manner, bringing tangible results and real benefits to the people of both countries.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the leaders of the two countries had engaged in open and frank discussions and agreed to strengthen cooperation in all areas within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; he also expressed confidence that the results of the talks would further consolidate and enhance the friendship, trust, and cooperation between the two countries, contributing to the benefit of the people of both nations.

Both sides agreed to cooperate more closely in responding to the current instability and volatility of the global economy, with a focus on cooperation in the private sector; striving to achieve the target of $25 billion in bilateral trade turnover annually as soon as possible.

The two sides will focus on cooperation to enhance energy security; promote cooperation in science, technology, innovation, biotechnology, and agriculture; and jointly develop and contribute to boosting the economy in the Mekong sub-region.

General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that the talks were very successful and achieved many positive, comprehensive, and substantive results. Both sides highly appreciated the developments in Vietnam-Thailand relations; in particular, political trust between the two countries has been continuously strengthened; defense and security cooperation has been enhanced; economic, trade, and investment cooperation continues to be a highlight; people-to-people exchanges are vibrant; and coordination at regional and international forums, especially within ASEAN, is becoming increasingly close.

On that foundation, the two sides had extensive discussions on directions and measures to further develop Vietnam-Thailand relations in a stronger, more sustainable, and more effective manner.

General Secretary and President To Lam stated that both sides agreed to further deepen political trust, considering it the political foundation for the long-term and close relationship between the two countries; to promote high-level exchanges and contacts at all levels and in all sectors through all channels, and to enhance the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms; and to maintain and promote the effectiveness of defense and security cooperation mechanisms. Both sides committed to strengthening cooperation in combating transnational crime; promoting negotiations and signing of bilateral legal cooperation agreements; and reaffirming their commitment to not allowing any individual or organization to use the territory of one country against the other.

Regarding the economy, General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized that the two sides will strengthen cooperation in potential areas such as clean energy, digital economy, green economy, innovation, high-tech agriculture, promote connectivity in transportation and logistics infrastructure, effectively utilize economic corridors in the Mekong sub-region, especially the East-West economic corridor, to facilitate the flow of goods and services between the two countries and in the region.

Regarding cooperation between localities, the General Secretary and President highly appreciated the attention and support of the Thai Government to the Vietnamese community living, studying, and working in Thailand; and affirmed that they will enhance the effectiveness of cooperation, promote tourism, connect cultures, education, and people-to-people exchanges, especially among the younger generation, thereby deepening understanding and close ties between the two nations.

Regarding regional and international issues, the General Secretary and President affirmed the importance of maintaining ASEAN's unity and central role, agreeing to strengthen coordination of positions on issues of common concern, including promoting peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea, and resolving disputes peacefully on the basis of international law.

General Secretary and President To Lam expressed his confidence that, with the determination of the leaders and people of both countries, the Vietnam-Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will develop even more strongly, substantively, and effectively, for the benefit of the people of both countries and making a positive contribution to peace, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.
