Dong Anh develops concentrated agricultural production areas

Ha Noi’s Dong Anh District was recognised as meeting new rural standards in 2016. As part of its efforts to become an advanced and exemplary new rural district, Dong Anh has implemented a range of initiatives to improve local livelihoods, including the development of concentrated agricultural production areas.

The district is now home to numerous large-scale agricultural models that offer high economic efficiency.

Formation of large-scale production areas

Dong Anh possesses many advantages for agricultural development. In recent years, the district has promoted a shift in crop and livestock structures, moving from small-scale production models to specialised cultivation zones and large-scale farms.

Currently, Dong Anh District has six specialised, concentrated agricultural production areas: a sticky rice cultivation area covering 800 hectares in Thuy Lam, Lien Ha, Duc Tu, and Viet Hung Communes; a safe vegetable growing area, also covering approximately 800 hectares, spread across Van Noi, Tien Duong, Nam Hong, Bac Hong, Nguyen Khe, Co Loa, and Tam Xa Communes; an ornamental flower and plant cultivation area, featuring mainly peach blossoms, ornamental kumquats, lilies, and various potted flowers, covering 200 hectares in Uy No, Tien Duong, Tam Xa, and Vinh Ngoc Communes; a maize production area of 100 hectares in Tam Xa and Vinh Ngoc Communes; and a fruit-growing area, including banana and pomelo, covering around 100 hectares in Tam Xa, Vinh Ngoc, Hai Boi, and Dai Mach Communes.

According to Dong Anh Vice Chairman Hoang Hai Dang, the district has consistently prioritised and invested in agricultural production. The focus is on developing ecological and organic agriculture and applying scientific and technological advances to create high-value cultivation and livestock models.

To support the application of science and technology in agriculture, the district has allocated 5-10 billion VND annually for many years. This funding supports farmers with pesticides and agricultural supplies such as biological rodenticides, rice straw treatment products, environmental treatment agents, biological pesticides, high-quality aquatic breeds, safe vegetable production models, and mechanisation tools.

In line with the trend towards concentrated and specialised agricultural production—ensuring quality, food safety, and the application of high technology—Dong Anh has established and maintained 40 agricultural and food supply chains.

These supply chains are always ready to support farmers in marketing their products, greatly contributing to the sale of produce from agricultural zones, especially vegetable-growing areas, thereby helping farmers secure stable incomes.

Living standards in Dong Anh continue to improve, with average income in 2024 estimated at 85.8 million VND per person per year.

Promoting the application of science and technology in agriculture

Despite many positive outcomes, agricultural development in Dong Anh still faces challenges. Production remains mostly small-scale, limited to household levels. The application of high technology is still restricted, and productivity, product quality, and efficiency have not yet reached optimal levels.

The district’s policies encouraging investment in agricultural development are assessed as insufficient to attract households and enterprises. Although some production-to-sale supply chains have been established, their number remains limited and their implementation still encounters difficulties.

Moreover, investment in agricultural development and rural technical infrastructure has not yet met the district’s growing needs. Agricultural land is increasingly shrinking, posing challenges to modernisation and the establishment of large-scale production.

In some areas, the irrigation infrastructure has deteriorated and become fragmented due to urbanisation, reducing its capacity to support agricultural activities.

To develop a modern, high-value agriculture that contributes to the construction of new rural areas, Vice Chairman Hoang Hai Dang stated that Dong Anh will continue to restructure its agricultural sector, focusing on increasing production value on the same cultivated land area.

The district will further promote the application of science and technology in agricultural production, building high-tech agricultural models and commodity rice production models. It will also develop agriculture towards a clean and ecological approach, incorporating advanced scientific and technical methods.

Efforts will be made to promote mechanisation, reduce food crop areas, and expand cultivation of high-value crops such as specialty rice, safe vegetables, flowers, ornamental plants, and fruit trees.

At the same time, Dong Anh will develop large-scale livestock farming, applying safe, biological methods in accordance with value chains. The district will strengthen disease monitoring, inspection and control, and diversify livestock breeds with high productivity and quality.

The district will also continue to guide and support agricultural cooperatives in building and developing models that produce high-quality agricultural products, while effectively implementing support policies for agricultural and rural development.

Dong Anh will actively mobilise social resources to develop agriculture and build new rural areas, while encouraging investment in agricultural production linked with agro-processing industries.

As of now, 100% of Ha Noi’s communes and districts have been recognised as meeting new rural standards. Among them, 229 out of 382 communes and five districts—Gia Lam, Dong Anh, Thanh Tri, Hoai Duc, and Thanh Oai—have achieved advanced new rural standards. Ha Noi remains the leading locality in the country in building new rural areas.
