According to the General Statistics Office under the Ministry of Finance, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) in May 2025 was estimated to have increased by 4.3% compared to the previous month and 9.4% year-on-year. Overall, in the first five months of 2025, the IIP rose by 8.8% compared to last year, a positive sign of industrial growth in the early months.

In particular, the water supply, waste and wastewater management sector increased by 11.3% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the manufacturing and processing sector rose by 11.0%; electricity production and distribution grew by 3.3%; and the mining sector rose by 1.2%.

Compared to last year, the IIP for the first five months of 2025 increased in 61 localities. Notably, Ba Ria – Vung Tau and Cao Bang Provinces recorded declines of 3.4% and 3.3%, respectively. Several localities achieved notable increases in IIP thanks to strong performance in the manufacturing and processing industries, as well as electricity production and distribution. On the other hand, some areas posted lower or negative growth due to weak performance in the manufacturing, mining, and electricity sectors.

The General Statistics Office reported that a number of key industrial products saw increased output during the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, including: automobiles; televisions; liquefied petroleum gas (LPG); NPK compound fertiliser; casual wear; rolled steel; fabric made from natural fibers; cement; steel bars and angles; leather shoes and sandals; and granulated sugar. Meanwhile, several commodities experienced declines, such as natural gas, crude oil, synthetic fibre fabrics, and beer.

Alongside the industrial production upturn, the number of workers employed in industrial enterprises (as of May 1, 2025) also increased by 1.1% from the previous month and by 4.5% compared to last year.
