Why DIFF stands out among the world’s top fireworks festivals

After more than 17 years accompanying the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF), Ms Nadia Shakira Wong, Executive Director of Global 2000 and Advisor to the DIFF 2026 Jury Panel, believes that what places DIFF among the world’s leading fireworks festivals lies not only in the performances lighting up the sky, but also in the way Da Nang has built a complete festival ecosystem, where technology, art, culture and tourism blend together to create a distinctive experience.

More than fireworks, DIFF is a complete festival ecosystem

According to Ms Nadia, very few countries today are able to organise a festival with the scale and operational standards of DIFF. What makes the event different is not the number of fireworks or participating teams, but the way Da Nang has transformed a competition into a full-fledged festival experience.

“DIFF is not an ordinary fireworks festival. It is an international playground where competing teams can learn from one another. The scale of organisation, logistics system, stage, grandstands and audience size are all very special factors,” she shared.

According to Ms Nadia Shakira Wong, very few countries today are able to organise a festival with the scale and operational standards of DIFF.

The international expert noted that even renowned fireworks festivals such as Montreal in Canada mainly focus on the fireworks displays themselves, while DIFF offers a comprehensive experience, with artistic performances, music, lighting shows and entertainment activities all connected into one unified programme.

“In many places, audiences come to watch the fireworks and then the event ends. But in Da Nang, they are immersed in a complete festival experience.”

It is this “360-degree” model that has shaped DIFF’s distinctive identity. Fireworks are no longer a standalone product, but have become a highlight within the city’s cultural, entertainment and tourism ecosystem.

From the perspective of industry insiders, DIFF is now among the world’s leading fireworks festivals. Ms Nadia said this is also a view she has frequently heard from international competing teams after each season. “Over the past 17 years, many fireworks teams from around the world have come to Da Nang to compete. On social media, DIFF has also been mentioned many times by the fireworks community as one of the most exciting festivals globally,” she said.

Technology elevates the experience, while branding brings Da Nang to the world

If organisational scale creates DIFF’s difference, technology is the factor that helps the festival continuously raise the standards of its performances.

According to Ms Nadia, in just 17 years, the fireworks industry has changed rapidly. From manual firing in the past, today’s performances are electronically programmed with near-absolute precision.

At DIFF, the FireOne system - one of the most advanced fireworks control systems currently available - is connected directly to the stage via fibre-optic cables under the Han River, with a wireless backup system always in place to ensure safety.

The entire programme is pre-programmed according to timecode. Once the signal is activated, the whole performance runs automatically with an accuracy of around 99.99%, requiring seamless coordination among the technical system, stage, music and hosts.

After 17 years, DIFF has become a summer icon of the Han River city. When people mention Da Nang, DIFF immediately comes to mind.

According to Ms Nadia, the increasing use of digital simulation, fireworks programming and artificial intelligence (AI) by competing teams is no longer a future trend, but already a reality in the modern fireworks industry. Technology helps make performances more precise, creative and safe.

What has impressed the international expert most after many years working in Da Nang, however, is not only the technical innovation, but also the way DIFF has become a symbol of the city. “Almost everyone mentions fireworks when they talk about Da Nang. When this city is mentioned, people immediately think of DIFF,” Ms Nadia said.

In her view, that is the festival’s greatest success. Beyond economic efficiency or tourism revenue, DIFF is helping build a destination brand with a distinctive identity for Da Nang on the global tourism map.
