Coffee exports set new record

Viet Nam’s coffee exports reached 5.45 billion USD with 953,900 tonnes in the first six months of 2025, nearly equal to the whole year of 2024’s turnover of 5.48 billion USD. Maintaining traditional markets and increasing the export of deeply processed coffee are solutions for this industry to reach the target of 7 billion USD for the whole year of 2025.

Phan Minh Thong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company, said that coffee export turnover increased sharply over the past six months thanks to Viet Nam's average coffee export price standing high, reaching more than 5,700 USD per ton, up more than 59% over the same period last year.

Coffee prices increase is partly due to fluctuations in the world market’s coffee supply and the significant improvement in the quality of Vietnamese coffee over the past 10 years. Famous roasters in Europe, the US, and Italy all know and use Vietnamese Robusta coffee.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment shows that Germany, Italy, and Spain are the three largest coffee consuming markets of Viet Nam in the first half of the year, accounting for 16.3%, 7.9%, and 7.4% market shares, respectively. In the first five months of 2025, coffee exports to Germany increased 2.2 times while Italy climbed 45.1% and Spain 55.8%.

Among the top 15 export markets, coffee export value recorded the strongest increase in Mexico, surging by 71.6 times. Even China, the market with the lowest growth rate, achieved a rise of 22.9%.

Notably, the increase in Arabica and processed coffee exports shows that the Vietnamese coffee industry is tending to invest heavily in technology and Arabica raw material areas, shifting to exporting value-added products, meeting the consumption needs of the European Union (EU), the US, and Japanese markets with high-quality products.

In addition, many markets with increased coffee consumption also create room for Vietnamese export enterprises such as the UK and Canada.

Tran Ngoc Quan, Trade Counsellor at the Viet Nam Trade Office in Belgium and the EU, said that in the first four months of 2025, Viet Nam’s coffee exports to the EU reached 983.2 million EUR, an increase of 30% over the same period in 2024. However, Viet Nam mainly exports raw coffee, which has not created high added value, so profits are still low.

“To effectively exploit the EU market, businesses need to focus on differentiated product lines, including high-quality coffee, processed coffee, certified coffee and specialty coffee.

In addition, the EU market is shifting strongly to green and clean consumption with the application of sustainable development standards on labour and environment; while consumers are not only interested in price and product quality but also in the production process of goods, so businesses need to quickly catch up with this trend,” Quan advised.
