Strengthening political trust, consolidating the traditional friendship between Viet Nam and Cambodia

Meanwhile, at the invitation of President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, General Secretary Lam will also co-chair a high-level meeting between the CPV Central Committee’s Politburo and the Standing Board of the CPP Central Committee, as well as a meeting of the three party chiefs of Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Laos.

Alongside his state visit to Laos, this marks General Secretary To Lam's first overseas working trip following the success of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam. Taking place in this particularly significant context, General Secretary To Lam's working trip conveys an important message about the utmost importance and top priority that the Party and State of Viet Nam place on Viet Nam-Cambodia relations.

The trip is also expected to usher in a new phase for good neighbourly relations, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainable development between the two countries, with deeper and more closely integrated collaboration.

June 24, 1967, entered the history of Viet Nam-Cambodia friendship as an important milestone when the two countries officially established diplomatic relations, laying a solid foundation for the development of solidarity and good friendship over the past nearly six decades.

As two closely neighbouring nations with long-standing bonds, Viet Nam and Cambodia have always supported each other during difficult times and hardships, together overcoming the upheavals and vicissitudes of the era. The two countries once shared the same trench, sincerely supporting each other during the arduous years of fighting for national independence and freedom.

The victory on January 7, 1979, which overthrew the Pol Pot genocidal regime in Cambodia, stands as evidence of the strength of friendship between the two countries, as well as a shining symbol of pure and noble internationalist solidarity. Viet Nam-Cambodia relations are close-knit and enduring, continuously cherished, nurtured, and valued by the leadership and peoples of both countries across generations, becoming a precious common asset of both nations.

With a solid foundation of political trust, in recent years Viet Nam-Cambodia relations have continued to develop steadily, yielding positive results in many fields.

Defence-security cooperation, which serves as the pillar of bilateral relations, has been increasingly strengthened, particularly in coordinating to ensure common security, combat transnational crime, and jointly build a border line of peace, friendship, and cooperative development.

Trade, investment, and tourism cooperation have maintained stable growth momentum, becoming a highlight of bilateral relations. In 2025, bilateral trade turnover reached 11.33 billion USD, up more than 11.7% from 2024. Viet Nam is currently Cambodia's third largest trading partner globally and its largest trading partner within ASEAN. Both sides are striving to realise the goal of soon raising bilateral trade turnover to 20 billion USD.

Within the framework of the working trip, General Secretary To Lam, together with senior leaders of Cambodia and Laos, will co-chair the meeting between the three party chiefs of Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Laos.

Looking back on past years, it can be said with pride that Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Laos have together written beautiful pages of history on solidarity, closeness, sharing, and standing shoulder to shoulder in wartime.

In the current new phase, this spirit continues in mutual companionship and support in national construction. Amid a regional and global situation with many complex and unpredictable developments, strengthening Viet Nam-Cambodia-Laos solidarity relations carries even greater significance, serving as a driving force and solid foundation for all three countries to continue overcoming challenges, building a future of peace, stability, and sustainable development.

The meeting between the three party chiefs, to be held within the framework of General Secretary To Lam's working trip to Cambodia, sends a strong message about the historical value and strategic significance of the Viet Nam-Cambodia-Laos solidarity tradition.

General Secretary To Lam's working trip to Cambodia is an opportunity for Vietnamese and Cambodian leaders to strengthen exchanges, consolidate the foundation of political trust, and promote effective, practical, and comprehensive cooperation, creating momentum to elevate Viet Nam-Cambodia relations to new heights — especially in the context of the two countries marking their 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, a milestone on the path of companionship and development.
