State President To Lam was elected as Party General Secretary
Mr. To Lam, a Politburo member and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, was elected General Secretary of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) with 100% approval votes.
The election was held during a conference in Hanoi on August 3. The conference was called by the CPV Central Committee and chaired by Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
In his remarks, Party General Secretary To Lam committed to carrying on the revolutionary accomplishments of the late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and earlier generations of leaders.
He vowed to maintain solidarity and unity and, in collaboration with the CPV Central Committee, the Politburo, and the Party Central Committee's Secretariat, to resolutely lead and direct the entire Party, people, and army in achieving the goals and tasks set forth by the 13th National Party Congress, successfully organizing the 14th National Party Congress, and steadily advancing the nation's development in the new period.
Party General Secretary and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam To Lam was born on July 10, 1957, in the Nghia Tru commune of Van Giang District, Hung Yen Province. He presently resides on Phan Đinh Phung Street, Quan Thanh Ward, Hanoi's Ba Đinh District.
He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on August 22, 1981, and has a distinguished academic background, including the titles of Professor and Doctor of Law.
Throughout his career, Mr. To Lam has held a number of important positions. He served on the 11th, 12th, and 13th Central Committees, as well as the 12th and 13th Politburos. He also served as a deputy in the National Assembly for the 14th and 15th tenures.
His tenure in the Ministry of Public Security is remarkable. He was appointed Minister of Public Security from 2016 to 2024 after serving as Deputy Minister of Public Security from 2010 to 2016. In January 2019, he was elevated to the position of General of People's Public Security.
In 2024, he was elected President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. His recent election as Party General Secretary is another big milestone in his remarkable career.
